Traditional Music and Dance Center of Anogeia

The Traditional Music and Dance Center of Anogeia is an innovative infrastructure which gives visitors the opportunity to know the local musical idiom, the personalities of the Cretan Music and Dance Tradition and through them the wider region, history and music and dance tradition.

Through a narrative approach, users are offered the opportunity to experience the cultural events of Anogeia in a unique way, to learn about the madinadhes (=Ιmprovised, fifteen-syllable rhyming couplets, with an eight-syllable and a seven-syllable part), to create their own madinadhes in a playful way, to get information about traditional dances and even to proceed with their learning under the guidance of a digital dance teacher.

Through a complex and rare educational experience, visitors discover how nature, environment and place are connected to people, their customs and their imprints.

Project information

The Traditional Music and Dance Center of Anogeia is a pioneer infrastructure with deep cultural and social footprint. It is a milestone Project for the cultural development of Crete, integrating the history, the traditions and the values of the local community into interactive applications of cutting-edge technology.

It was created aiming to function as a cultural pole of attraction for the inhabitants and visitors of the area, offering a live place, where traditional music and dance are not only preserved, but also developed. At the same time, it is intended to be a hub of education and creation, giving people of all ages the opportunity to become familiar with the music and dance of Crete, to discover the art and to participate actively in its dissemination.

The Center boasts modern infrastructure and equipment, including multi-purpose rooms, teaching and rehearsal spaces, as well as facilities for hosting events, workshops and performances. Through these activities, the Center functions as a bridge between the tradition and the new generation, offering an open space to all those who wish to connect with the culture of Crete. Furthermore, the role of the Center is not limited to the local community, but aspires to function as a reference point for the study, recording and promotion of Cretan cultural heritage at a national and international level. With its actions, it ensures the continuity and sustainability of Cretan culture, enhancing local identity and the connection with the broader cultural scene.

The implementation of the Project was carried out at the initiative of the Municipality of Anogeia, which envisioned a space that would honor the past and inspire the future. The design and technical support were implemented by the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCI Lab) of the Institute of Computer Science oof the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), with funding from the ERDF-44 No. OPS: 3862, TITLE "Action 2.c.1: Strengthening applications in the field of electronic culture and tourism (RIS3Crete sectors) - 2" of the OP "Crete" 2014-2020"
